Chunky Crochet Blanket Patterns: 18 Free Bulky and Super Bulky Throws

Three chunky crochet blankets: a pink and cream lace stripe throw, a cream stitch sampler throw and a striped almond ridges blanket with fringe

Start here: super bulky (#6) yarn works on an 8 mm to 15 mm hook in these patterns, bulky (#5) on an 8 mm (L). For the most texture, open #1, the Popping Posts Throw. For the biggest blanket, #8 is 65 x 70 in. For the calmest TV project, #11 is one cake of yarn and one stitch.

There is something about a chunky blanket on a cold evening. Big yarn, a big hook, and a few rows later you already have something warm across your knees. I gathered 18 of my favorite free chunky and super bulky crochet blanket patterns from designers I trust, from deep waffles and bobbles to lacy stripes and a stitch sampler. Every pattern is free to read on the designer’s own site.

Chunky yarn has one more gift that I love. The stitches are so big that when a throw has been resting in the basket for a few weeks, you can see at a glance which row you were on and pick it right back up. If you are not sure whether your yarn counts as bulky or super bulky, our yarn weight chart explains the numbers on the label. And if you love the texture of the interweave cable stitch afghan, several of these will feel like old friends.

What You’ll Need

For most of these blankets you need super bulky blanket yarn such as Bernat Blanket or Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, and for the #5 patterns a bulky weight yarn. A set of large hooks from 8 mm to 15 mm covers almost everything here. Keep a large-eye tapestry needle and some locking stitch markers close by, so you can mark your row before you put the blanket down.

Tips for Working with Chunky Yarn

  • Buy all the yarn at once. Super bulky blankets use a lot of skeins, and dye lots can differ. Our best yarn for crochet blankets guide compares the popular ones.
  • Count the chain twice. Big chains twist easily. A quick recount before row 1 saves a lot of frogging.
  • Weave ends with a big needle. Thick yarn will not fit through a regular tapestry needle. Split the plies and weave each half in a different direction.
  • Mark your row. Clip a stitch marker into your last stitch and jot the row number on the pattern. It makes picking the blanket back up next week easy.
  • Expect a heavy blanket. A full throw in super bulky yarn has real weight. Work it on your lap or a table instead of letting it hang from the hook.
