This pumpkin has rosy pink cheeks, big shiny eyes and a curly vine. I smiled back at it, and I’m not even sorry.

Because the square is 14 inches, you need very few of them. Nine squares and a border already make a lap blanket. Tonya also tells you how many yards of each color you need, which saves you a second trip to the yarn store.

Small, sweet and quick. A chunky little pumpkin with a brown stem sits right in the middle of a cream granny square.

Maria Weaber · Easy · Hooks: G/6 4.0mm and J/10 6.0mm · About 6.5 in square · Video tutorial · Free

Here the pumpkin is made on its own and sewn onto a gray granny square. The gray makes the orange glow, which feels very Halloween.

This is a smart pick if you are new to granny squares. You practice the square, then the pumpkin, then put them together. Mix it with plain purple, black and orange squares for a spooky-cute throw.

Tips Before You Start Your Pumpkin Blanket

  • Make one square first. Measure it, then do the math. Squares that are 6 inches wide need 8 across and 8 down for a 48 inch throw, so 64 squares. Squares that are 14 inches need only 9.
  • Pick 3 or 4 colors, not 10. One orange, one green, one cream and one brown look calm and pretty. Too many colors can look busy.
  • Weave in ends as you go. Do it after every square, not at the end. Future you will be so grateful.
  • Hate sewing squares together? Try a blanket that grows in one piece, like our continuous granny square blanket.
  • Finish with a pretty edge. A simple border makes a pile of squares look like one blanket. Borrow one from our 20 crochet edging patterns.

Not ready for squares yet? Start with an easy one row repeat blanket in fall colors. Same cozy feeling, zero joining.

What You’ll Need

Most of these blankets use plain worsted weight yarn in pumpkin orange, plus a little green and cream. A 5.5mm (I/9) crochet hook covers most of the pumpkin squares. For the fast jumbo blanket, grab Bernat Blanket Extra Thick yarn. Keep a pack of stitch markers and a blunt tapestry needle nearby for all those ends.

Whichever one you pick, I hope it keeps you warm on a lot of chilly evenings. And if you have orange yarn left over, an old favorite of ours, the cozy pumpkin tweed blanket, makes a great next project. Happy hooking!
