If you're looking for a baby blanket that's as sweet as the little one it's made for, you're going to absolutely adore this Sweetheart Baby Blanket. I first shared this pattern years ago and it's still one of my favorites — because those tiny V-stitch “hearts” that appear in every single row? Pure magic. Whether you're making it as a gift or whipping one up for a cozy nursery corner, this blanket checks every box: easy stitch repeat, fast progress, and a result that looks like you worked way harder than you did. It's the definition of mindless crochet at its best!

The pattern was originally designed by The Patchwork Heart, and if you love free crochet baby blanket patterns, this one deserves a permanent spot in your project queue. Ready to dive in?

I have used Stylecraft Bambino and a 4mm hook. This yarn has a very special look and feel. I used 2 x 100g balls of 6 colours for my large blanket, which measured 120cm square and there was enough leftover to make a baby blanket 55cm square.

How This Pattern Works

The magic of the Sweetheart Baby Blanket comes from the V-stitch. When you work it in rows with color changes, the stitch naturally forms little heart shapes — it sounds complicated but it's one of those happy accidents where the result looks incredible with almost zero effort. The color changes in this blanket are what really make it shine, creating those beautiful candy-stripe rows of hearts. You'll be addicted to watching it grow, I promise!

This is a wonderful project for beginner crocheters too — once you learn the V-stitch repeat, the whole blanket is practically on autopilot. Speaking of mindless crocheting, if you haven't tried the Superbly Simple Baby Blanket for Mindless Crocheting, you absolutely should — it's another one I keep coming back to.
