Before you start: size, yarn, hook and time
This easy crochet baby blanket in one color is a lovely first blanket, because once your hands learn the stitch you can crochet it while you watch TV. Here is everything I would decide before making the first chain.
Skill level
Beginner. It is one stitch in one color, repeated, so there are no color changes and very few ends to weave in.
Pick your size first
- 36 x 36 inches: my pick for a gift. Big enough for the stroller, the car seat and tummy time.
- 30 x 36 inches: a stroller or car seat blanket.
- 40 x 60 inches: a crib or toddler bed blanket, for later.
Leave 1 to 2 inches of that size for the border. All the sizes are drawn to scale in our baby blanket size guide.
Yarn and hook
The video does not name a specific yarn or hook, so choose by feel. I always say: you must love the yarn you touch. Pick a soft yarn you enjoy holding, because when you crochet with pleasure, the blanket carries that love with it.
- My choice: a soft worsted weight yarn (number 4 on the label) with a 5 mm hook.
- The faster choice: a soft chunky yarn (number 5) with a 6.5 to 8 mm hook.
- Buy 10 to 15 percent more yarn than you think you need, ideally all from the same dye lot.
Your starting chain
Make a small swatch in this stitch with your yarn, measure how many stitches you get in one inch, and multiply by the width you want before the border. That gives you your chain, so your blanket comes out the size you planned.
How long it takes
A simple baby blanket like this takes about 10 to 20 hours, or one to two weeks of relaxed evenings. Once you know the stitch by heart, it goes much faster. Here is how long it takes to crochet a baby blanket, with tips to finish it.
Finish with a small border
Simple is elegant. A few rounds of single crochet or half double crochet around the edge make it look like a finished gift, without adding much work.
Common mistakes with a dense one-color stitch
- The edges pull in. Count your stitches at the end of every row for the first few rows, until the rhythm is in your hands.
- The blanket feels stiff or curls. A dense stitch needs a relaxed hand. If your swatch feels like cardboard, go up one hook size.
- The starting chain is too tight. Make the chain with a hook one size bigger, then switch back.
- The yarn runs out near the end. Buy all your yarn at once, from the same dye lot, with 10 to 15 percent extra.
