They add a pop of contrast color without much fuss, and they give the fabric extra structure so the finished case actually holds its shape instead of flopping over. What You’ll Need
- 4-ply cotton yarn (worsted/medium weight) in two or three colors
- A 3.5mm (E/4) crochet hook
- A zipper sized to match your finished piece
- A yarn needle for seaming

A Few Tips Before You Start
- Swatch your spike stitch first. Tension on spike stitches tends to run tighter than regular stitches, so a quick practice row saves you from a wonky final piece.
- Pick your zipper before your last row. Measure it against your crocheted piece so you know exactly how long to make the case.
- Cotton yarn holds its shape best for something that’s going to get tossed in and out of a backpack all year long.
- Block your piece before sewing in the zipper. A flat, blocked rectangle is so much easier to seam neatly.
- Go bold with your contrast color so those spike stitch rows really pop against the base.
