A crochet costume is the kind of Halloween make that gets used: the photos, the party, the walk around the block for candy, and then it goes in a box for the next little one. These 14 free patterns run from a baby’s first costume to witch hats in adult sizes, with a few small extras you can finish in an evening if October gets away from you.
Every pattern here is free on the designer’s own website. Where we have written about a pattern before, the link takes you to our post first, with the materials list, and from there to the designer.

1. Baby Witch Costume

The whole outfit is here: a striped dress, a pointed hat, little shoes and a broom to hold. Melissa Hassler wrote it in sizes 0–3 and 3–6 months, in worsted weight yarn with 4.5 mm and I/5.5 mm hooks, so it is made for a baby’s first Halloween.

2. Cheshire Cat Baby Costume

A pink and purple striped dress and a cat-ear hat, after the grinning cat from Alice in Wonderland. The dress comes in 0–3 and 3–6 months and the hat is written for all sizes, so a big brother or sister can match. Worsted weight yarn and an I/5.5 mm hook.

3. Rainbow Brite Costume

For anyone who grew up in the ’80s: a blue Rainbow Brite dress with a yellow star and a hat with yarn hair. The dress is worked top down in the round, in sizes 0–3 and 3–6 months, in worsted weight yarn in red, orange, yellow, blue, purple and white.

4. Crochet Cupcake Costume

A pink frosting top with sprinkles, built around a kid-size hula hoop (the designer used a 25-inch one) and worked in Bernat Blanket yarn, so it grows fast. The designer wears hers in the photo; for a child, she suggests worsted weight yarn and a smaller hook.

6. Puff Stitch Pumpkin Beanie

Rows of puff stitches make the pumpkin’s ridges. The free version on Amy’s site is the 3–6 month size; the pattern with every size is sold in her shop. You need to be comfortable with the puff stitch, and her page shows how.

7. Skull Hat

Diana could find skull motifs but no pattern that joined them into a hat, so she wrote her own: a band of skulls around a beanie, sized for adults and kids.

Two strands of worsted weight yarn held together give this hat a firm brim and a tall point that stands up on its own. It is worked from the top down in six sizes, toddler to adult large, with a 5 mm (H) hook.

Before you start
Measure the head, not the age. Size names like “3–6 months” or “adult” are averages. Measure around the head just above the ears and choose the size whose finished hat is about an inch smaller, so it stays on through a whole evening.
Make a gauge swatch for the dresses. A baby dress that comes out too small cannot be worn, and a few rows with your own yarn and hook will tell you before you have made the whole thing.
Plan for the cold. Trick-or-treating is often chilly. The pumpkin hat has earflaps and the Mary shawl has a hood, so both work with a warm coat underneath.
