Such a wonderfully textured blanket! Most patchwork blankets are made by making first a bunch of squares which, then, you sew or join in a random manner or by following a certain order. Some other times, patchwork blankets are made in a different way.

This Patchwork Baby Blanket by Kim Guzman is made in join-as-you-go mitered squares with a border that is applied “sideways” to the blanket, rather than working in rounds. The result is spectacular and fun too, considering you get to use more colors to make this cute baby blanket.

If you can crochet a square, then you can make a full blanket. Especially when the blanket is easy to make and is so much fun! Find below what you need to make this beautiful Patchwork Baby Blanket by Kim Guzman.
Finished size
38″ x 38″Materials
- (A) Lion Brand Ice Cream* (100% acrylic, DK weight, 394 yds per 100g): 4 skeins, shown in Tutti Frutti
- (B) Lion Brand Jamie (100% acrylic, DK weight, 137 yds per 50g): 2 skeins, shown in Little Boy Blue
- Suggested hook size: H-8 [5mm]
- Needle (for weaving ends)
*Yarn Note: Although this yarn is classified as a fine weight, it works up more like DK weight for me. If substituting yarn, I would substitute with a DK, not a fine.
Notes
This project is made in join-as-you-go mitered squares. Each square is built on the previous square. The squares are first built into a strip of 17 squares, then there are 17 strips of squares built. You do not cut off after each square (unless you want, of course). The border is applied “sideways” to the blanket, rather than working in rounds. You could also consider it to be a join-as-you-go method.
If you prefer, you can work the entire project in a solid color for a wonderfully textured blanket.
This entire project is worked in back loops throughout. When working the last stitch of a row in back loop only, I prefer to make that last stitch in both loops to retain tension. If your last stitch looks a bit loopy on the edge, try this as well.
Gauge
Each square measures approximately 2″.
Special Stitches
Single Crochet 3 Together (sc3tog): [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over, pull loop through] 3 times, yarn over, pull through 4 loops on hook.
