Instructions
Part 1: The Granny Square Base (Rounds 1-3)
Round 1: (with Green)
- Start with a magic ring.
- Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Place a stitch marker in the top of this ch-3 if desired.
- Into the ring, work 2 dc. This forms your first “cluster” of 3 dc total.
- Ch 2.
- Into the ring, work [3 dc, ch 2] three more times. (You will have 4 total clusters of 3 dc, separated by ch-2 sps).
- Pull the magic ring tight to close the center.
- Sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3 to join.
- Sl st across the next 3 sts to move into the first ch-2 corner sp.
You should have: 4 clusters of 3 dc, 4 ch-2 corner spaces.
Round 2: (with Green)
- In the corner sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. This creates your first corner: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
- In the next ch-2 sp (the space between corners), work 3 dc.
- In the next corner sp, work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc].
- Repeat steps 2-3 two more times, working 3 dc in each side space and (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner.
- Sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3 to join.
- Sl st across to the next ch-2 corner sp.
You should have: 4 corners made of (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), and 2 clusters of 3 dc on each side.
Round 3: (Start with Green, switch to White)
- In the corner sp, work ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
- In the next sp (between clusters), work 3 dc.
- You are now at the next corner. Work 3 dc, ch 2.
- For the final 3 dc of this corner, work only 2 dc.
- For the 3rd dc, work a dc until 2 loops remain on the hook. Drop the green yarn and pick up the White yarn. Yarn over with White and pull through both loops to complete the color change. (Carry the green yarn behind).
- In the next side sp, work 3 dc with White.
- In the next corner sp, work a full corner: [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] with White.
- In the next side sp, work 3 dc with White.
- Work the next corner until the last stitch: Work 3 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the corner sp.
- For the final dc of this corner, work a dc until 2 loops remain. Drop White, pick up Green. Yarn over with Green and pull through to complete the color change. (Carry White behind).
- In the next side sp, work 3 dc with Green.
- In the final corner, work 3 dc, ch 2, 2 dc.
- For the final dc, work a dc until 2 loops remain. Drop Green, pick up White. Yarn over with White and pull through.
- Sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3 (from the start of the round in Green) to join. You may need to use the Green tail to join to the correct stitch.
- Sl st across to the next corner sp.
You should have: A square with a white “V” starting to form in the center of two sides.
Part 2: Forming the Tree (Rounds 4-5)
Round 4: (Color sequence: White, Brown, White, Green, White)
This round forms the tree trunk and expands the white tree shape.
- With White (from the join), in the corner sp: Ch 3, 1 dc.
- Work the next dc as a dc until 2 loops remain. Drop White, pick up Brown. Complete the stitch with Brown.
- Ch 2 with Brown.
- In the same corner sp, work 3 dc with Brown.
- Work the 3rd dc of this cluster as a dc until 2 loops remain. Drop Brown, pick up White. Complete the stitch with White.
- Side 1 (Tree Sides): In the next two side spaces, work 3 dc in each using White. Carry the Brown and Green yarns behind.
- Next Corner (Tree Top): In the corner sp, with White, work [3 dc, ch 2, 2 dc].
- Work the final dc as a dc until 2 loops remain. Drop White, pick up Green. Complete the stitch with Green.
- Ch 1 with Green. Cut Green, leaving a short tail.
- Re-attach Green in the same ch-1 sp with a slip knot. Ch 1 again (this creates a clean ch-2 corner: Green ch-1, re-attach, Green ch-1).
- In the same corner sp, work 3 dc with Green.
- Work the 3rd dc as a dc until 2 loops remain. Drop Green, pick up White. Complete the stitch with White. You can now cut the Green yarn.
- Side 2 & Corner: Work the remaining two sides and final corner using only White yarn. In each side space, work 3 dc. In the final corner, work a full [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc].
- Sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3 to join. Sl st to the corner sp.
You should have: A distinct brown trunk at the bottom center, with green and white forming the tree above it.
Round 5: (with White only)
This round finishes the tree shape and unifies the square.
- Work this entire round in White.
- In each corner sp, work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc].
- In every side space (between corners), work 3 dc.
- Weave in the carried yarn ends from previous rounds as you work over them.
- After completing the last corner, sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3. Fasten off White and weave in the end.
You should have: A complete white-framed square with a green and brown Christmas tree in the center.
Part 3: Final Border (Round 6)
Round 6: (with Red)
This adds a festive final border.
- Join Red yarn with a sl st in any corner sp.
- In the same corner sp, work ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
- In each side space and cluster across the side, work 3 dc. (You should have multiple clusters of 3 dc along each side, depending on the size of your square).
- In each corner sp, work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc].
- Continue around, working 3 dc in each space/cluster along the sides and full corners in the corners.
- Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. Fasten off and weave in all remaining ends.
Part 4: Pom-Pom Topper
- With a small amount of desired color (e.g., yellow or white), start with a magic ring.
- Ch 3 (does not count as a stitch here).
- Into the ring, work 5 unfinished dc: (Yarn over, insert hook in ring, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) – STOP. Repeat 5 times. You will have 6 loops on your hook (5 unfinished dc loops + the initial loop).
- Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on the hook.
- Ch 1 tightly to secure. Fasten off, leaving a tail for attaching.
- Pull the magic ring tail tightly to close the pom-pom.
- Use the tail to sew the pom-pom to the top point of the Christmas tree.
Finishing
- Weave in any remaining yarn ends securely.
- Block your square lightly with steam or water to shape it perfectly.
Your Christmas Tree Granny Square is now complete! Use it as a coaster, or join multiple squares to create bags, blankets, or pillows.
