I love it when a blanket looks fancy but the stitch behind it is actually simple. This is one of those.

Crochet Design Time made this one in a warm cream yarn with little flecks of blue running through it, and the finished edge has a soft, scalloped shape that looks almost lacy. It only uses a 2-row repeat, so it is an easy one to memorize fast.

The shell shapes give the blanket a lot of drape, which makes it a nice choice for a lap blanket or a throw for the couch. It would also make a lovely baby blanket in a lighter yarn.

Because the pattern repeats so quickly, this is a good one to pick up if you want a project that grows fast without feeling like you are fighting the stitch count the whole way through. If shell stitches are your thing, our easy shell stitch crochet baby blanket post is worth a look too.

Heads up: this one is a video tutorial only, there is no separate written pattern page for it, so the video below is the full pattern.

A Few Tips Before You Start

  • Use a smooth, worsted weight yarn so the shell shapes show up clearly.
  • Keep your tension loose and even. Tight shells will pull the blanket in at the edges.
  • A cotton blend yarn like the one used here gives the shells a nice bit of shine.
  • Block the finished blanket so the scalloped edge lays flat instead of curling up.
