Out of every crochet blanket tutorial posted on YouTube this past year, this is the one people watched the most. Over 2.4 million views. And here is the funny part: the whole video is four and a half minutes long.

It comes from the World of Crochet channel. There is no talking and no long intro. Just two hands, a long hook, white yarn, and a stitch that turns into a soft, thick fabric full of tiny holes, like a waffle or a honeycomb. Watch it once over your morning coffee and you will already know how it goes.

It is number 1 on our list of the 20 most-watched crochet baby blanket tutorials of the year, so if you like this one, there are 19 more waiting for you there.

What Makes This Blanket So Special?

This is Tunisian crochet. Instead of finishing each stitch right away, you pick up a loop in every stitch across the row and keep them all on your hook. Then you work back the other way and take them off two at a time. One trip forward and one trip back make one row.

That back-and-forth gives Tunisian crochet its look. The fabric is thicker and flatter than regular crochet, and it looks almost knitted. In this video, the way the loops are picked up leaves neat little open spaces, so the finished piece is squishy but still breathes. That is just what you want in a baby blanket.

And because the video is so short, it is easy to watch again and again until your hands get it. You can pause on every pass.

What You’ll Need

  • A Tunisian crochet hook. This is the one must-have. A regular hook is too short to hold a whole row of loops. For a baby blanket, a Tunisian hook with a flexible cable is easiest, because a wide blanket will not fit on a straight one.
  • Soft yarn in a light color. The maker uses white, which shows off the texture. A machine-washable baby yarn is perfect.
  • A tapestry needle and scissors to weave in the ends.

Tips Before You Start

  • Go up a hook size. Tunisian crochet tends to curl at the bottom. A hook one or two sizes bigger than your yarn label suggests keeps the fabric soft and flat.
  • Keep the first loop loose. On the way back, the first pull-through should be just one loop. After that, it is two loops at a time. Mixing this up is the most common beginner mistake.
  • Plan the width before you start. A stroller blanket is about 30 inches wide. Make a small swatch, count stitches per inch, and multiply. Our blanket sizing calculator helps.
  • Finish with a border. A round of single crochet or a simple edging hides the curl and makes the blanket look finished. Borrow one from our free edgings and borders.
