These cozy mittens look knitted, but they are made entirely with slip stitches. The dense stitches keep your hands warm, and the piece is worked flat in back-loop rows, then the thumb and the side seam are joined with more slip stitches. The video is beginner friendly and shows every join up close.
Watch the video, then use the written steps below. They are the video’s own subtitles, word for word, so you can follow along at your own pace.

Step-by-Step: The Video Subtitles
These are the video’s subtitles, copied word for word. The video has no chapters, so they are split into seven parts, each with the time it starts in the video.
Part 1 (0:00)
Who would have thought these gloves, which resemble a knit stitch,
are made entirely using slip stitches.
The dense stitches provide warmth,
and the soft cream color scheme is adorable.
Both stylish and warm.
First, create a foundation chain.
After the foundation chain, chain 56.
Go back into the second chain from the hook.
Into the back bump of the chain,
work one slip stitch.
Beginners should place a stitch marker
in the first slip stitch of each row.
Continue working one slip stitch
into the back bump of each chain.
Work a total of 55 slip stitches.
End of Row 1.

Part 2 (1:01)
For Row 2, chain 1 and turn your work.
Starting from this row,
and for all following rows,
work into the back loop of each stitch.
Work one slip stitch in order
into the back loop of each stitch.
Don’t forget to place a stitch marker in the first stitch.
Work a total of 55 slip stitches.
End of Row 2.
For Row 3, chain 1 and turn your work.
This row is also worked into the back loop
Work 55 slip stitches in order.
For Rows 4 and 5,
work 48 slip stitches in each row.
Row 5 completed.
Part 3 (1:54)
For Row 6, first work 48 slip stitches in order.
Here we need to increase by 2 stitches.
For the first increase stitch,
first pick up the strand below the hook.
Insert the hook under the strand below,
then back into the main piece,
into the back loop, and work one slip stitch.
In the next stitch, work another slip stitch.
After this row, there should be 50 slip stitches.

Part 4 (2:40)
For Row 7, chain 1 and turn your work.
Work 50 slip stitches in order.
For Row 8, first work 50 slip stitches in order.
Then increase by 2 stitches.
Insert the hook under the strand below,
then back into the main piece,
into the back loop, and work one slip stitch.
In the next stitch, work one slip stitch.
This completes the 2-stitch increase,
resulting in 52 slip stitches total.
All subsequent increases should follow this
method. For the following Rows 9
through 52,
follow the stitch counts
shown on screen.
Part 5 (3:44)
After completing Row 52,
join the thumb section.
Find the raised strand at the top of the thumb.
Each V-stitch pattern
has a raised strand at the top.
Take a smaller crochet hook
and pass it through each raised strand in order.
Finally, pass the hook through the loop,
and pull the yarn through.
Chain 1,
and tighten the loop.
Switch back to the original hook.
Join the side of the thumb.
Remove the stitch markers from both sides.
Insert the hook through both
corresponding strands of the first stitch on each side.
Work one slip stitch.
Then,
continue working slip stitches, one in each corresponding stitch.
Work a total of 14 slip stitches.
Thumb join completed.

Part 6 (5:06)
Return to the main body.
Continue working towards the fingertips.
Work one slip stitch into the first stitch.
Place a stitch marker
in this first slip stitch.
Continue working in order,
for a total of 28 slip stitches.
After completing Row 53,
for Row 54, first work 28 slip stitches in order.
The 28th slip stitch is worked at the stitch marker location.
Then continue working slip stitches in order,
for a total of 27 slip stitches.
For the following Rows 55 through 75,
continue following the stitch counts shown on screen.
Please complete these on your own.
Part 7 (6:18)
After Row 75, join the side seam.
The video demonstrates the right hand.
For the left hand, flip the piece and then join.
The joining method is the same as for the thumb.
Pass the hook through each raised strand at the top in order.
Then pass it through the loop,
and pull the yarn through.
Switch back to the original hook.
Starting at the stitch marker location,
insert the hook through both corresponding strands on each side,
and work slip stitches, one in each corresponding stitch,
to join the side seam.
This concludes the knit-look glove tutorial.
See you next time.

Slip Stitch Mittens Tips
- Pause for the on-screen counts. For some of the rows, the video shows the stitch counts on screen instead of saying them, so pause the video and note them down as you go.
- Mark the first stitch of every row. The video suggests it for beginners, and it makes slip stitch rows much easier to count.
- Back loop only. From Row 2 on, every stitch goes into the back loop. That is what gives the mittens their knit-look ribs.
- Left and right hand. The video shows the right hand. For the left hand, flip the piece before you join the side seam.
