OMG this butterfly button cover is absolutely stunning!

Quick, let's learn to crochet a bunch of butterfly buttons for yourself!

Super easy

The video tutorial is very detailed

I'm using this 4-ply cotton yarn for pairing

Still using this trusty old 3.0mm crochet hook

First make a slip knot with the yarn like this

Adjust it to about the same thickness as your hook

Then place it on your hook

This now counts as your first stitch

Next chain 5 stitches

Beginners remember to count – the loop still on your hook is the 6th stitch

Then we go back to the first stitch

Make a slip stitch to join into a ring

After the slip stitch, chain 1 as your turning chain

Then insert hook into the same stitch where you made the slip stitch

Make a regular single crochet

Beginners might want to place a stitch marker here

Next we move to the second stitch

Remember to carry the starting yarn tail along

Weaving as we go

In the second chain space we'll make 2 single crochets

Creating a single crochet increase

From the third stitch onward we'll repeat this pattern

One single crochet, one increase – repeat twice more

Finally insert hook into the first horizontal stitch

Complete with slip stitch

Now we've finished Round 1

This round has 9 stitches total

The slip stitch counts as first stitch

Counting the chains back, this is the 9th stitch

This extra-looking stitch doesn't count – it's from joining

For Round 2, chain 4 after the slip stitch

Then make 2 triple treble crochets in same slip stitch

In next stitch make 2 more triple trebles

After second triple treble, chain 4

Then slip stitch into same stitch

One butterfly

long wing is done

Next stitch make single crochet

Following stitch make slip stitch

Now repeat the first wing pattern

To make the other long wing

Chain 4, make 2

triple trebles

Next stitch: 2 triple trebles, chain 4, slip stitch in same stitch

Next stitch make slip stitch first

Then chain 3 from slip stitch

Make double treble crochets

2 double trebles in same stitch

Next stitch make 2 double trebles

Then chain 3

Slip stitch into same stitch

Slip stitch into next stitch

Repeat small wing pattern for other small wing

First stitch: chain 3, 2 double trebles

Next stitch: 2 double trebles, chain 3, slip stitch

After slip stitch we can fasten off

Butterfly body is complete

Pull final tail tight and weave to back

First secure this yarn end

Flip to front – see this earlier single crochet?

Insert hook into Round 2 space below it

With yellow yarn, yarn over then insert into single crochet stitch

Pull loop through

Chain 4 stitches

Slip stitch back into second chain

Three slip stitches total

Finally slip stitch back into original single crochet

Chain 4 again

Slip stitch back into second chain x3

Complete other butterfly antenna

Final slip stitch into same single crochet

Leave long tail before cutting – we'll need this

Long tail is for butterfly's lower body

Flip to back again

First knot the two yellow ends together

Weave the longer end down to butterfly's tail section

Between the two small wings

Insert from Round 2 space again

Pull yarn through

Loop around from top and pull through again for doubled effect

Pull snug here

See how the shape emerges?

Just weave in ends neatly on back

Best part – all weaving hides perfectly under wings

Back looks super clean

This incredibly simple yet lifelike butterfly button cover is complete!

Go give it a try!
