One ball of Caron Cake yarn. That’s it. That’s the whole shopping list for this baby blanket.
The 1 Ball Caron Cake Baby Blanket by Rhea Papellero is the pattern you reach for when a baby shower just got added to this weekend’s calendar. The Caron Cakes yarn is self-striping, which means the color changes happen automatically — no carrying multiple colors, no weaving in extra ends. You just crochet and watch it stripe itself.
The pattern uses a simple shell stitch that gives it a soft, wavy texture. It’s beginner-friendly, comes with both a written pattern and a diagram, and genuinely finishes fast.

A Few Tips Before You Start
- Caron Cakes is the star here. The self-striping is what makes this blanket special. You can use another self-striping yarn in the same weight and the pattern will still work, but the effect won’t be as dramatic in a solid color.
- Buy two balls if you want a bigger blanket. One ball makes a nice stroller/lap size. If you want a larger blanket for the crib, grab a second ball in the same colorway. The stripes won’t match up perfectly, but that’s part of the charm.
- Shell stitch tip: Don’t pull your shells too tight. Shells need a bit of give or they curl up at the edges. If your blanket edges are rolling, loosen your tension slightly.
- Gift wrapping idea: Roll it up and tie with a coordinating ribbon. It presents beautifully and takes about 30 seconds to wrap. Much better than a gift bag stuffed with tissue paper.
