Watch the Video Tutorial

This little smiley face keychain is two flat circles of single crochet, green in the video, with a happy face stitched on in black yarn. You join the two circles back to back, add a chain loop for the keyring, and you are done in one short sitting. Leave an opening and it can hold a card, or tuck a magnet inside for a fridge magnet.

Watch the video, then use the written steps below. They are the video’s own subtitles, word for word, so you can follow along at your own pace.

Step-by-Step: The Video Subtitles

These are the video’s subtitles, copied word for word. The video has no chapters, so they are split into four parts, each with the time it starts in the video.

Part 1 (0:00)

Today I’ll teach you how to crochet this smiley face pendant.
It can hold a card in the opening.
You can also add a magnet to make a fridge magnet.
Or leave it empty.
Making it just as a little pendant is also nice.
For yarn, use Meng Wawa No. 2.
Round 1: Start with a magic ring.
Chain to start.
Chain 1 to begin (does not count as a stitch).
Work 8 single crochet into the ring.
Pull the ring tight and slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Part 2 (0:44)

Chain 1 to start.
Round 2: 8 increases of single crochet.
That means 2 single crochet in each stitch.
Slip stitch to the first stitch.
Chain 1.
Do this for every round—
I won’t repeat later.
Round 3: First stitch single crochet.
Second stitch increase.
That makes 1 group, crochet 8 groups.
Round 4: First stitch single crochet,
second stitch increase,
third stitch single crochet.
That’s 1 group, crochet 8 groups.

Part 3 (1:33)

Round 5: Work 32 single crochet.
One stitch into each stitch.
Slip stitch to the first single crochet.
For the first piece, fasten off.
Turn to the back.
With a yarn needle, pick up half a loop from each side and slip stitch.
Use two strands of black yarn to stitch the face.
First stitch one horizontal line.
Then follow the edge of Round 3 to stitch the facial feature.

Part 4 (2:37)

For the other piece, do not fasten off.
Place it against the first piece, back to back.
Join together with slip stitches.
Chain 6 to make the hanging loop.
In the same stitch, insert through both layers and slip stitch.
Then continue slip stitching through both layers all the way around.
Slip stitch around to finish.

Stitch count check (added by DailyCrochet)

Not part of the video. Our own count of each round/row, worked out from the subtitles above.

Round / row Stitches How it is worked out
Round 1 8 “Work 8 single crochet into the ring” = 8 (the chain 1 “does not count as a stitch”)
Round 2 16 “8 increases of single crochet”, “2 single crochet in each stitch” = 8 x 2 = 16
Round 3 24 (1 single crochet, 1 increase) x 8 groups = 8 x 3 = 24
Round 4 32 (1 single crochet, 1 increase, 1 single crochet) x 8 groups = 8 x 4 = 32
Round 5 32 “Work 32 single crochet. One stitch into each stitch” = 32, one in each of the 32 stitches of Round 4
Hanging loop 6 chains “Chain 6 to make the hanging loop” = 6

Crochet Smiley Keychain Tips

  • Make two circles. The first piece is fastened off. The second is not, because you use its working yarn to join the two pieces.
  • Chain 1 and slip stitch every round. The video says to do this for every round, and does not repeat it later.
  • Use Round 3 as your guide. The smile follows the edge of Round 3, so it sits in the same place on every keychain you make.
  • Pick its job before you join. Slip in a card, add a magnet for the fridge, or leave it empty as a little pendant.
