Easy-to-Follow Crochet Braided Strap Tutorial

Materials

  • Yarn: Snowball Soft (or any worsted-weight yarn)
  • Hook: 2.5 mm (or size to match yarn)
  • Notions: Scissors, yarn needle, stitch marker (optional)

Instructions

Foundation & First Row

  1. Foundation Chain:
    • Make a slipknot and CH 11.
  2. Row 1:
    • Starting in the 2nd CH from hook, work 1 HDC.
    • Continue 1 HDC in each CH across (10 HDC total).

Second Row (Back Loop Only)

  1. Turn: CH 1, flip work.
  2. Back Loop Only (BLO):
    • Work 5 HDC into the back loops of the next 5 stitches.
  3. Chain Loop:
    • CH 15.
    • SLST into the first CH to form a ring.
  4. Complete Row:
    • Work 5 HDC into the remaining stitches (10 HDC total for row).

Third Row (Braid Section)

  1. Turn: CH 1, flip work.
  2. First 5 HDC: Work 5 HDC as usual.
  3. Braid Loop:
    • Work 16 SC into the 15-CH loop from the previous row.
  4. Last 5 HDC: Work 5 HDC to finish the row.

Fourth Row (Repeat Second Row)

  1. Turn: CH 1, flip work.
  2. Work 5 HDC.
  3. CH 15, SLST into first CH to form a ring.
  4. Work 5 HDC to complete the row.

Fifth Row (Repeat Third Row)

  1. Turn: CH 1, flip work.
  2. Work 5 HDC.
  3. Work 16 SC into the 15-CH loop.
  4. Work 5 HDC to finish.

Continue the Pattern

  • Alternate between Row 4 (CH loop) and Row 5 (SC into loop) until the strap reaches your desired length.

Braiding the Strap

  1. Once complete, lay the strap flat.
  2. Weave the loops:
    • Pass the 2nd loop through the 1st loop.
    • Pass the 3rd loop through the 2nd loop.
    • Continue until all loops are braided.
  3. Secure the end:
    • Sew a button at the starting end.
    • Use the last loop as a buttonhole.

Finishing

  • Weave in all loose ends.
  • For a polished look, gently steam-block the strap.

Tip: Adjust the CH length (e.g., CH 20 for a looser braid).
