I am wanting to try this pattern but I am confused of the squares and colour changes. I have the first black square almost completed but I cannot figure out if it’s all black or is there white added?? Then how to make the other squares with white added? And how do I know how/when to add gray??? I love this pattern and want to make it so much.

Hi! I started to do a practice square for this afghan.I find it makes no sense. It isn’t even square! Are the directions for another afghan? I’m really confused and for the life of me I don’t understand the chart. I’ve been crocheting for 40 years and I am truly confused. Thanks for any help.
